If I live in the floodplain, am I required to buy flood insurance?
Although it ia a wise investment for property owners in the floodplain, the City does not require the purchase of flood insurance. The City does participate in the National Flood Insurance Program to make insurance available to residents in the City. Under Federal law, the only people required to buy flood insurance are those with federally insured mortgages, such as FHA and VA. Mortgage companies which carry conventional mortgages may also require flood insurance. Contact your homeowners’ insurance carrier for information on flood insurance policies.
