Benbrook History
Full History
The history of Benbrook dates back to the mid-1800s, when settlers began establishing farms and small communities in what was then the western frontier of Fort Worth. Among the most influential early residents were James M. Benbrook and Peter Boaz, who are widely recognized as the city’s founding fathers. Their leadership and investment in the area helped establish a permanent settlement that would grow into the thriving community known today as Benbrook.
The town developed along important travel and trade routes connecting Fort Worth to surrounding ranches and farming communities. In its earliest days, Benbrook served as a gathering place for settlers, ranchers, and merchants traveling through the region. Agriculture and cattle ranching played an important role in the local economy, and the community continued to grow steadily throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
A major milestone in the city’s history came with the construction of Benbrook Lake in the early 1950s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake was built primarily for flood control along the Clear Fork of the Trinity River. Over time it became an important recreational destination for residents and visitors. Today, Benbrook Lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, camping, and hiking, and it remains an important part of the community’s identity and quality of life.
The full and fascinating story of Benbrook’s growth from its early settlement days to the modern city it is today is detailed in Chapter 2 of the 2013 Benbrook Comprehensive Plan. The plan provides a deeper look at the people, events, and milestones that shaped the community.
The City has also worked to preserve and share its history through publications and media. In 2011, the City published Images of America: Benbrook, a pictorial history that features historic photographs and stories from the community’s past. In 2013, the City acquired the documentary Once Upon a Time in Benbrook, a video presentation that brings the city’s history to life.
Both the book and the documentary DVD are available for purchase at Benbrook City Hall, located at 911 Winscott Road, which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on business days. For more information, please call 817-249-6990.
In 2012, the Benbrook Historical Society was established to help preserve the city’s heritage. The organization works to collect, archive, and share items of historical value including photographs, documents, artifacts, and personal stories that reflect the rich history of Benbrook and its residents. The society also promotes awareness of historical landmarks throughout the community. For more information about the Benbrook Historical Society, please contact Jessica James at 817-249-6092.
